Commodity Futures Agreements - A Brief Description Of Futures Contracts

Compared to cash contracts, which involve payment against the physical delivery of goods immediately or after a specified time, a futures contract is actually a special sort of agreement made completely under the rules of a commodity exchange, which may or may not call for the actual delivery of goods and payment in cash on a future date.

As outlined by Emery, a futures contract can be defined as a contract for the future delivery of some commodity with no reference to precise lots, made under the policies of some commercial body, within a set form, in which the conditions as to unit of amount, the quality and time of delivery are stereotyped. Only the ruling of the total amounts and the price is left open to the contracting parties.

These types of contracts are meant only for future settlement, although the precise date of the arrangement is decided by reference to the wishes of the seller along with the established rules of the commodity agreement.

Such contracts don't specify the specific grade of a commodity, but impliedly refer to a basic grade referred to as the contract grade, accepted as the typical grade for all futures transactions.

The details in respect to the quantity, the time of settlement, the quality and so forth are mentioned in the rules and regulations, and are common in all such contracts. The contracting individuals need to decide upon the price at which the contract would be to be settled, sometime in one of the trading months specified by the exchange.

Futures contracts are produced only within the 'ring' of the commodity exchanges, and never outside of the exchanges. Only members of a commodity exchange can enter into such a deal.

No outside party can become a party to a futures agreement. Such contracts may be made only in multiples of a fixed unit of investing. No such contracts may be made in fractions of these units.

If you are a business owner looking to raise business capital through futures agreements, contact a financial consultant by searching: mergers companies or company go public.
